Q. Who is Hermann the German? A. Hermann the German was a German Tribal leader who in 9 AD united the German tribes in war against the Roman Empire. He was successful in a sweeping defeat of 3 Roman Legions, thus stopping the Roman advance in northern Europe. Hermann, or Arminius as Germans refer to him, is a national hero in Germany. A massive statue of Hermann was erected near Detmold, Germany. The Sons of Hermann erected a 102-foot tall statue of Hermann in New Ulm in1897. It is the 2nd tallest copper statue in the United States, 2nd to the Statue of Liberty. You can climb up the statue for a spectacular view of the City of New Ulm from Memorial Day until Labor Day.
