Alexander Harkin built his general store in 1870, eight miles upriver from New Ulm in the fledgling town of West Newton. Today, it is the sole remainder of that now-defunct town, but it lives through costumed interpreters who proudly show off and explain the history of pioneer life on the Minnesota River.
It is owned by the Minnesota Historical Society, and about 40% of its stock is original. To bear out its authenticity, visitors often say, “it even smells like an old store.” It’s located within sight of the river and is surrounded by mature oak and cottonwood trees, giving it a feel of having been saved from time’s ravages. Additionally, on most Sundays during the warm months, there are demonstrations and period entertainment to further the feel of having stepped back in time.
