New Ulm Lights Up For The Holidays!

Travel writer Lisa McClintick recently visited New Ulm and Mankato and wrote about her experiences in a Star Tribune article titled “Mankato and New Ulm light up for the holidays.”

For shopping, she highlights Domeiers and Guten Tag Haus with their German imported items, and also mentions A to Zinnia and Inspired.  Our downtown is full of great boutiques full of unique items!  With the garland hanging from above and Christmas music piped through the streets, holiday shopping in New Ulm is very popular with visitors and local alike.  More shopping in New Ulm.

Of course a stop in New Ulm is not complete without a visit to Schell’s Brewery!  Lisa also had a chance to visit Schell’s new sour beer brewery, the Starkeller Brewery and Taproom, while she was here.  She was busy, as she also experienced The Grand Kabaret, Morgan Creek Vineyards, and The Retz 227 (New Ulm’s new speakeasy).  More attractions in New Ulm.

Lisa recommends dining at historic Turner Hall. The murals in the Rathskeller at Turner Hall date back to 1873 and were covered during WWI (when it was not a popular time to be German in America). The murals were covered for 80 years!  They have since been restored and are worth a visit, whether you grab a bite to eat while you are there or not!  More dining in New Ulm.

While in New Ulm, Lisa stayed at the Best Western Plus and comments that the timberwork architecture details on the hotels adds to the German ambiance of New Ulm.  You’ll find German features on buildings all over town!  We have a few different hotels and B&B here, no matter your preference.  More lodging in New Ulm.
